Road Trip

I'm trying to plan out our road trip to California for when we move.  I want to find places that we can stop and let Lucas run around, maybe even with a playground.  I found the Mcdonalds that have playplaces that are along the way, but I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.  I was hoping to find rest areas with playgrounds, but I couldn't seem to find a website with that kind of information.  I'm sure I'm not the first person to ever travel with a toddler so I'm betting there is some good information out there, I just have to find it.  Any ideas for other fun things to do, or places to stop other than rest areas?  We're going on 80 through Nevada, which is to me pretty much the ugliest drive ever until you get to California, but maybe someone else has some ideas for cool things to see or do on the way.

We've been on road trips with Lucas before, but I can always use more ideas for keeping kids entertained in the car as well.

There’s Wendover Will in West Wendover, the City Park in Wells, the Elko Airport, Cow Rustling Boots of Crazy Tex Hazelwood and White King, World’s Largest Dead Polar Bear in Elko, Thunder Mountain Park just past Winnemucca, Chinatown Ruins Museum in Lovelock, Scheels Sportsman Attraction in Sparks, Last Chance Joe in Sparks, Birthplace of Denim Jeans in Reno, and Bonnie and Clyde’s Death Car in Verdi. These are all mentioned on this website, http://www.roadsideamerica.com/map/nv. Of course, this doesn’t sound too exciting for Lucas so maybe you should just play lots of videos for him to watch in the car or else take another route.

There really is very little between Elko and Reno. I am surprised that Cheryl was able to find so many things at all actually.

I can't remember rest stops along the route (Provo to Carson was the drive we did to get home, so I've done it more than a few times); for the most part you are just stuck for those 5 hours. Winnemucca has a McDonalds with deer heads as decorations. That's always classy.

There's a mall in Sparks called Legends, which has a store called Scheels. Inside Scheels is a full-sized ferris wheel if that sounds like fun for him.

Depending on your time line Lake Tahoe is always fantastic (and so pretty after you've crossed the desert). It would be fun to spend an afternoon (or a few hours) playing in the sand.

Also, since you are driving on 80 all the way through, you likely won't stop in Carson (wrong way, but you could continue your drive on 50), but there is a pretty cool train museum in Carson if Lucas likes such things.

Usually my goal when making that trip is to just get it over with and go as long as possible without stopping. I just don't find Nevada very exciting. The trip improves a lot once you get close to Tahoe.

Honestly, I don't think my mom has really made the drive from SL to the Bay Area. IT SUCKS! Just drive as fast as you can and get it over with. The small towns and rest stops are honestly disgusting and I feel like I need to bathe in rubbing alcohol to disinfect myself.

This is your best bet with a small child: start early and drive as fast as you can. Play movies in the car with a dvd player and bring a coloring book and markers. This and naps will occupy Ez for the 10 hours.
